Faisalabad, 16 August 2023: A distressing incident unfolded in the Jaranwala Tehsil of Faisalabad on Wednesday after allegations against two Christian men named Raja Amir and Rocky Masih, accused of desecrating the Quran. Hundreds of Christian homes were vandalized, and 21 churches of various denominations were attacked – many by torching – as well as parsonages. They broke the windows and doors of the houses and took out fridges, sofas, chairs, and other household items to pile them up in front of the Church to be burnt. They also burnt and desecrated Bibles. According to the reports, as many as 2,000 people had already fled their homes.
Speaking to The Current (an online news platform), a local resident said violence broke out after a Christian father tried preventing a group of boys from harassing his daughter.
“This is a case of harassment. A girl from the Christian community was being teased by some members of the Muslim community and when her father and brother tried to stop them, allegations of blasphemy were raised.”
